(OOC) Skill 3: Basic Reading
Form: delicious star-shaped cookie
This is the first level of Davian's telepathy, and at this point it's reasonably limited. It gives him the ability to do basic Reading, which is mostly looking at people's memories. Effectively, once he makes contact with someone's mind, he can frame a question and their mind will respond with memories or information as if they had framed it themselves. He'll experience any memory he Reads as though it had happened to him, and the memory will be filtered through its owner's perceptions; he'll feel the way they felt at the time and effectively remember being them as the memory played out. This can have lasting effects on him, particularly if he Reads from someone, say, committing mass murder (good job, Davian!). He cannot yet read surface thoughts, borrow skills or use Control.
People aren't generally aware that this is happening, but that doesn't really matter; at this level of ability, Davian cannot enter someone's mind if they are resisting him at all, even at the level of "I kind of don't want you reading my mind, dude". It's 100% ICly voluntary! The one exception is that he can now tell, pretty much infallibly, when people are lying to him.
Detecting lies is Davian's particular talent as an Augur. Whenever someone lies to him, he can see black smoke rising from their mouth; this is just a visualization and only he can see it. This works on their own understanding that they're lying, so it hits evasion and creative omission, and it's specific enough to pinpoint the parts of a statement that are a lie. This ability works through almost all mental shields and defenses, including magical ones erected by other Augurs; for someone shielded, he gets a slight headache instead of the black-smoke visualization. (Without one of the memories he'd received, he wouldn't know to watch for it, but he does now.) Obviously we can work something out with the limiter if it's super important that he not be able to lie-detect someone, and Persona-based blocks (hi, Shinji!) will keep him out completely.
This skill also gives him the ability to reach out and sense the presence or absence of minds in a general area, but that's nothing he can't do already by looking for Essence.
EFFECTS:
* Now a human lie detector
* +50 desire to play Geshett with people who cheat at cards :)
