Form: alphabet block, ask "What is a memory" to use (4/5: Davian)

ab memoriam )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* This is how he came back to the present. It kind of sucked, but it was a lot better than the first time through the rift.
* Not a lot of information, per se. The most comes from the name Aarkein Devaed, the symbol and the fact that he's in a book of Darecian fables.
* There's a mark he should have that means he's bound to some kind of Tenets. It's connected to how much Essence he uses. They're something Wirr thinks about a lot.
* Something terrible happened to the Caledon school :( But he'll get the sense of moving-on very strongly from this memory -- not that he's not sad, but he's starting to heal.
* +50 not being scared of things he understands
* +50 bro with Wirr
* +100 optimism, especially connected with his powers

ad astra per aspera )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* He couldn't use Essence before Deilannis. Because he doesn't have a Reserve, apparently? Was that what he was worried about with Wirr and Asha?
* He needs to drain Essence from his surroundings to survive. Which explains...a lot of things, really. And is worrying. But he'll be able to feel it now that he knows what he's looking for.
* Using Essence was something he'd dreamed of for a long time, and actually doing it felt amazing.
* He's a good student; phenomenally good, apparently. Using kan is as natural for him as breathing.
* The idea of killing with his energy drain makes his skin crawl in the memory, but strangely, it doesn't anymore. That's worrying too.
* He knows he got safely back to his own time somehow, since he met up with his party again, but apparently it wasn't easy.
* Apparently he learns how to shapeshift at some point, but it's dangerous and ill-advised. So is, apparently, mind control -- which was apparently only a rumor even when the Augurs still ruled (???).
* +50 self-confidence, especially about his powers
* +10 concern about his personal metaphysics, and relief that he built the enhancement he did into his coat

morituri te salutant )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNS:

* Apparently he got back to the present somehow! Though not long ago, since Wirr knew but the rest of his friends didn't.
* The memory doesn't tell him where he is, but it must be important since everyone he knows is defending it.
* It means a lot to him that Aelric trusted him enough to let him Read swordsmanship lessons; his powers are feared (probably for good reason). Aelric is a bro (and a ridiculous swordsman).
* Wirr is just fascinated with Davian's augur powers, because best friends forever.
* He can absorb skills out of people's minds, but physical skills don't translate well because the memories he Reads are from the other person's perspective, in their body. Most people can't detect when he's Reading them. (See previous point re: a good reason.)
* Malshash wasn't kidding when he said Reading was dangerous; he's definitely trying to fuck up the enemy's minds (and failing because of their magic-blocking armor). He can't be trying to drain them because he's specifically targeting their heads.
* The Tenets are some kind of massive magical binding that take effect once someone uses a certain amount of Essence. One of them is not to use Essence with intent to harm non-Gifted, even indirectly. He's had them referenced before, but not explained this clearly.
* With time to think, he can guess that the enemy armor might be letting them manipulate time; they definitely have superhuman reflexes, speed and strength, plus the ability to see in the dark. Their helmets have no eyes, but there's a symbol -- three vertical wavy lines within a circle -- on their faceplates. This is somehow very ominous.
* All his friends are pretty badass. So is he.
* It's not going to be enough on their own to save the city, even against the enemy's first wave.
* +50 cool under fire
* +10 confidence
* +100 bro feelings for Wirr, Aelric and Dezia
* +20 swordsmanship; he may pick a sword up from the gym now.

* Now a human lie detector
* +50 desire to play Geshett with people who cheat at cards :)

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* These are his best friends, Asha and Wirr, and he loves them with all his heart. (Wirr he's seen in memories before, but not Asha, since their plotlines don't end up intersecting very much.)

* Something terrible is going to happen to him tomorrow. He's saying goodbye and they all know it, but none of them want to ruin the little time they have by talking about it.

* He's determined to face what's coming stoically, and not burden his friends with more than he has to.

* He's got a sense of the layout and feel of the Caladel school, since they wandered around a little bit before they went up on the wall. That place felt like it was special for them, a favorite spot.

* +1000 appreciation for friendship

* +50 fronting

* +20 love of high places

in memoriam )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* Reading! Basically a big practical infodump of how it feels and what the dangers and drawbacks are. (He'll actually be better at it when he gets the skill back, since he's going to be a LOT better at handling kan. He can tell that difference as well -- even with his current skills, he doesn't have to give wielding kan a second thought.)
* Relatedly, how to shield his own mind, which he's going to be able to do to some extent just by remembering. It's something literally anyone can do, but getting his mental discipline skill back will amplify it like crazy. Still, he'll be able to focus on defense if he needs to.
* He's seventy years in the past and could snap back at any time, which will kill him if he's not ready. Oh, shit.
* ...he's starting to like Malshash a lot. They snark but they're fond of each other, and have a good teacher-student relationship.
* He's super angry about something someone lied to him about, and chagrined that he didn't realize it. But he's also willing to put that aside if the circumstances demand.
* +50 curious
simple_not_boring: (small smile)
iacta alia est )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* The rules of Geshett and how to play! He may introduce the game, especially when he gets the skill back to cheat.
* Back home people with powers like Wirr's (and he thinks of himself in the same way) are hunted. By the kind of people Wirr set him up to divest of their coin.
* He loves Wirr, he does, but he can be a real ass sometimes.
* He should be able to tell when people are lying, pretty much infallibly. That'll be an interesting skill to get back.
* Wirr's a better liar than he is, but he can improvise when he has to.
* That was definitely the first time he killed someone and he didn't like it or mean it. He's sick afterward, but that's a different memory.
* Looking back, he can see that he was unconsciously manipulating time in his panic.
* +50 brave
* +50 annoyed about having surprises spring on him
* +25 bluffing skill
simple_not_boring: (a little lost)
ad multos annos )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* He knows Caeden, Nihim and Taeris's names, and has a strong sense of the other party members.
* Wirr -- tall, blond, athletic, obviously an Essence user -- is someone he trusts completely and feels very comfortable with. The others less so -- he doesn't know them as well, though he likes and trusts Caeden and feels respect and gratitude towards Taeris. But they're definitely a party.
* They're definitely in the same city he was in in the past. The fog is a dead giveaway, but Caeden also pointed out the library, and it was the same building. It's still super creepy.
* What the fuck is up with Caeden anyway, why does he have amnesia? Nobody seems to know, including him.
* WELL, THAT'S WHY THE ORKOTH SCARED HIM SHITLESS. God.
* Taeris is acting kind of suspiciously. On reflection, kind of not surprised to learn that he's been holding things back. (Did he deliberately take the wrong route?)
* This segues immediately into getting hurled into the timestream. So that's how that happened.
* What the hell is this prophecied savior business? Davian doesn't buy it, then or now. (Even though he's a seer himself...)
* +100 friendship feelings
* +100 bravery and determination
* +100 desire to help whenever he can
* +50 screw Fate

lectori salutem )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* He's in the past???
* He hasn't been there long; the room he's in isn't familiar, it's just somewhere to sleep, and he's still deeply confused.
* He can figure out by implication that kan is the force he draws on to use his powers, that Augur is the name for people with powers like his, that the Darecians were an ancient and advanced civilization, and that the Jha'vett is somehow responsible for sending him back in time.
* He also has a sense that the man he was with can change his own appearance.
* Apparently he meets this guy in his own future/the guy's past, and that's why he's here now.
* BOOKS ARE AMAZING LEARNING IS AMAZING :DDD
* He's just flat out awestruck by all the knowledge he was looking for being right there, written down in frank and practical terms.
* Relatedly, he gets a bunch of theory about Reading (what Augurs call telepathy). He has a good general idea of what he can do with it when he gets it, as well as some thoughts on the ethical implications.
* +500 desire to learn all the things
simple_not_boring: (Default)
the rift )

EFFECTS/WHAT HE LEARNED:

* BASICALLY NOTHING. The memory cuts off before he orients himself; as far as he knows, Aather is where he finds himself after the void.
* No idea where he was or what he was doing. Or who he was.
* He does get a few concepts from the disciplines he used -- he understands that Essence is magic/life energy, that despite these exercises he never learned how to do it, and that somehow he's drawing on something else. Mostly, though, what he gets is that the void sucks.

Name ???? // Davian
Age 16 (probably)
Team Sterling

Height/Build Medium height and skinny; he hasn't finished growing yet and it shows.
Hair Color/Eye Color Black/Brown
Notable Traits He has a raised scar from the corner of his left eye to his chin, pretty obviously a knife wound.

Other Davian's body doesn't generate life energy on its own; he's constantly draining tiny bits of it from any nearby source of magic, life, light or heat to keep himself alive. This is hard to notice but possible, and the drain itself is also basically unnoticeable; he can fuel himself indefinitely on sunlight if he has to. Relatedly, even though he's a pretty impressive mage, he pings as having no magic at all.

Uniform Notes: As of Day 420, Davian wears a hooded charcoal longcoat over a plain grey tunic and cargo pants. The coat generates its own heat if he flips the hood up, which will either keep him warm or provide him emergency Essence to drain (though not a lot; it does mean he won't keel over and die if he gets stuck in a blizzard for a while, though.) He usually keeps his peat fire heart charged and ready in a coat pocket, where he can get to it quickly if he has to.
